Sponge filters are indispensable for any hobbyist or breeder. These dense foam sponges can harbor incredible quantities of beneficial nitrifying bacteria. Use them anywhere you keep fish, one or two in small aquariums or multiples in larger tanks. Always keep extras going in your tanks, to speed up the cycling of new aquariums just by moving a mature sponge. An inexpensive remedy for overcrowding or inadequate filtration may be as simple as adding 1 or 2 Hydro-Sponges!

Hydro-Flo-Sponge
Sponge Filter specially fitted with a miniature water pump
Use fine sponge filter for polishing water or in small aquariums can replace air driven style to eliminate bubble noise or when desired for gentle water movement such as planted tanks.
Use coarse sponge to provide longer service life between cleanings or when higher flow rates are desired. Coarse foam sponge works well as mechanical filtration as well as biological.
Mini pump sits attached to top of lift tube allowing flow to be directed upwards for better turnover. Pump can also be optionally adapted to 90 degree using HS-EL elbows.

Hydro-Sponge Pre-Filters:

Coarse Foam Sponge for use as pre-filters on intakes of Water Pump intakes, Power Filters, Cannister Filters, Wet-Dry intakes, Bulkhead fitting intakes or anywhere particulate needs to be screened or intakes diffused to prevent small fish or fry from entering intake tubes. Higher flow rate intakes generally require larger sponges with greater surface area to prevent suction effect of intake. Either use a PVC “Tee” inlet with multiple small sponges or 1 larger sponge when this is a concern. Filter-Max III come with multi size adapters for various intake tubes of commercial aquarium filters such as Power Filters etc. These Filter Max do not have adapters for PVC pipe sizes. For adapting sponges to PVC use any of the other pre-filters which are made to fit on common schedule 40 PVC pipe fittings. The “HS -PF90” style shown above have a right angle elbow and all clear fittings. Pre-filters with “mini” sponges are half the regular length sponge and are usually adequate for up to 200 gallons per hour flow rates. For highest flow rates use extra large Hydro-Pond style Sponges #HS-PIII & #HS-PIV (same size sponge as Hydro V filters but in a coarse foam)
